Most modern diesels have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that traps soot. It's meant to burn off (regenerate) on a good run. Lots of short trips, such as school runs and town driving around Newton Abbot, can stop that happening, so the filter clogs and a warning light comes on.
Signs of a blocked DPF
- DPF warning light
- Loss of power or limp mode
- Engine fan running after you switch off, or higher fuel use (signs it's trying to regenerate)
What we do
First we read the fault codes and check why the filter blocked. A faulty sensor or another engine fault can stop regeneration, and if that isn't fixed it will just clog again. Then we carry out a forced regeneration using diagnostic equipment, which burns the soot off under controlled conditions.
If the filter is too far gone for a regeneration to clear it, we'll tell you plainly and explain the options.
Can't get it to us?
We've been known to come out to you. Recently we did a DPF regen on a van in Paignton on a Sunday. It isn't a guaranteed callout service, but if your diesel is stuck in limp mode, call Russ and we'll see what we can do.
Questions we get asked
Can I clear it myself with a long drive?
Sometimes. If the light has only just come on, a steady run of 20 minutes or so on a faster road can let it regenerate. Check your handbook. If the light stays on or the car goes into limp mode, call us.
