PureTech wet belt problems: warning signs and replacement

The 1.2 PureTech has a belt that runs in oil. Know the warning signs before a small problem becomes a big one.

By RPM Autocare, Newton Abbot · Published 26 October 2026

The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder petrol engine is fitted to a lot of Peugeots, Citroëns, DSs and Vauxhalls. Like Ford's EcoBoost, it has a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. When that belt starts to break up, it can starve the engine of oil. This guide explains what to look out for and what to do, based on the PureTech wet belt work we do at RPM Autocare in Newton Abbot.

Which cars have the PureTech wet belt?

Here are some of the models that use the 1.2 PureTech:

  • Peugeot: 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008
  • Citroën: C3, C4, Berlingo
  • DS: DS 3 Crossback
  • Vauxhall: Corsa (the 2019-on Corsa F), Mokka, Crossland, Grandland

That is not a complete list, as the engine is used in other models too. Newer versions, mainly the 48V hybrids from around 2023 to 2024, switched to a timing chain, but some non-hybrid cars sold since then still have the belt. The model year alone will not tell you, so the safest approach is to give us your registration and let us check.

Why do wet belts cause problems?

A wet belt relies on clean, correct oil. The rubber can break down over time, and faster with overdue oil changes, the wrong oil, or lots of short trips where the engine never fully warms up and fuel can get into the oil. As the belt deteriorates it sheds pieces into the oil. Those gather in the sump and can block the strainer on the oil pump pickup, so oil pressure drops.

On these engines, debris can also block the oil feed to the brake vacuum pump. That is an unusual and important point: it means a belt problem can show up as a change in how the brakes feel, not just as an engine warning.

Warning signs

Treat any of these as a reason to stop and get advice:

  • An oil pressure or "stop" warning, such as an engine oil pressure fault message telling you to stop the vehicle.
  • An engine management light.
  • A hard brake pedal, or less braking assistance than usual.
  • Rattling or ticking, especially from cold.
  • Loss of power.
  • Higher oil use than usual, or very dark, dirty oil between changes.

If you get an oil pressure or stop warning, or the brake pedal suddenly goes hard, stop as soon as it is safe. Do not keep driving to see whether it clears. Call a garage and talk through how to get the car checked. Brakes that suddenly need much more effort are not something to drive on with.

The right oil matters

Use oil that meets the manufacturer's specification for your engine. It is printed in the handbook and service schedule. The wrong oil, or oil left in too long, speeds up belt wear. We check the specification for your car at every service, and the best protection is simply keeping up with oil changes using the correct oil.

When should the belt be changed?

The manufacturer has shortened its original recommended interval for many of these engines, and it varies by engine and build date. Because of that, we do not think a single number is helpful. Check your service schedule or ask Russ, who can look up your engine and look at the history. The belt can also be checked for wear during a service, so if you are unsure, book a service and ask us to look.

What a proper replacement involves

A PureTech belt job is not just a belt. At RPM Autocare it covers:

  • A new wet belt, tensioner and idler, fitted with the correct locking tools.
  • The sump removed, with the oil pump pickup strainer inspected and cleaned and belt debris cleared out.
  • Checking the oilways that debris tends to block, such as the brake vacuum pump feed.
  • Fresh oil to the correct specification and a new oil filter.
  • Fault codes checked and a test drive before the car goes back.

If we find damage beyond the belt once it is apart, we stop and call you before doing anything else, and you get a quote before we start.

What about the extended warranty?

Stellantis, the group behind Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall, has extended warranty cover for some earlier PureTech engines from March 2024, under certain conditions such as service history. If your car might qualify, check with a franchised dealer before paying for a repair. We are happy to tell you what we find either way, and we cannot say from here whether your car is covered.

Planned beats unplanned

A belt that is replaced on time is a routine job. A belt that breaks up and blocks the oil system can mean serious engine damage, and may affect your brakes before then. If you drive a PureTech, a few minutes checking its history now is time well spent.

You can read more on our PureTech wet belt replacement page, or see our general timing belt page if you are not sure what your engine has. RPM Autocare is an independent garage and is not affiliated with or approved by Stellantis, Peugeot, Citroën, DS or Vauxhall.

Customers from Newton Abbot, Kingsteignton, Torquay and Paignton are welcome. Book in or contact us with your registration and we will tell you which belt your car has. If the oil light is on, please do not drive it.
